Getting to the Airfield
Where the Airlie Beach scenic flights take off: Whitsunday Airport at Flametree or Laguna Quays, the pickup stops, driving, and landing at Proserpine on the day.
If you are staying in Airlie Beach, take a flight from Whitsunday Airport at Flametree. It is 9 km by road from town, the courtesy buses take 10 to 15 minutes, and two of the three flights use it: Fly Australia’s and Ocean Rafting’s. The calendar below is Ocean Rafting’s Airlie Beach: Whitsundays & Heart Reef Scenic Flight, from US$244 (checked November 2026), with pickup from 21 named stops in town.
Pick your pickup stop when you book; the list includes the airfield itself if you would rather drive. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before.
Four airfields, and the one that matters

Four airfields come up when you plan a Whitsundays flight, and they are easy to mix up because three of them have “Whitsunday” in the name.
| Airfield | Where | Scenic flights on this site |
|---|---|---|
| Whitsunday Airport, also called Shute Harbour Airport | Flametree, 9 km by road east of Airlie Beach | Fly Australia and Ocean Rafting |
| Laguna Quays Airport | South of Proserpine | Whitsunday Air Tours |
| Whitsunday Coast Airport | Near Proserpine, 38 km by road from Airlie Beach | None; the commercial airport |
| Hamilton Island Airport | On Hamilton Island | None of the three |
Whitsunday Coast Airport is the commercial airport, owned by the council, and it describes itself as “just 30 minutes from Airlie Beach” (checked November 2026). No flight on this site takes off there.
Fly Australia and Ocean Rafting: Whitsunday Airport

Both companies fly from Whitsunday Airport, a small airfield at 12 Air Whitsunday Drive, Flametree, east of Airlie Beach, and both run courtesy buses from town.
- Fly Australia (the flight in the calendar on the homepage): a courtesy bus from named stops in Airlie Beach, about 10 minutes each way. The pickup list names Cruise Whitsundays and 384 Shute Harbour Rd. Parking at the airfield is free, and there is an air-conditioned lounge with luggage storage.
- Ocean Rafting (the calendar above): an air-conditioned bus from 21 named stops, about 15 minutes each way. The list includes Port of Airlie, the Airlie Beach Hotel, hostels, holiday parks and the airfield itself. The lounge has lockers, Wi-Fi, a water station, charging points and a cafe.
If you have a car, you can meet either flight at the airfield. Check-in is 30 minutes before take-off for Fly Australia and 45 minutes before for Ocean Rafting.
One rule worth knowing before you choose the bus: Fly Australia makes you responsible for being at your stop on time, and if you miss the bus, getting to the airfield yourself is at your own cost.
Whitsunday Air Tours: Laguna Quays
Whitsunday Air Tours' Whitsundays & Great Barrier Reef Scenic Flight takes off from Laguna Quays Airport, south of Proserpine, so the van ride is longer: its listing allows about 30 minutes each way from its ten pickup stops, or you can meet the plane at Laguna Quays. In return you get the smallest group (seven passengers at most), the longest flight (70 minutes) and the lowest price of the three, from US$219 (checked November 2026).
Its pickup list also includes Whitsunday Coast Airport. That makes it the one flight here you can join straight off a plane at Proserpine.

Arriving on the day you fly
It can be done, but leave room. Whitsunday Coast Airport to Whitsunday Airport is 46 km by road, and Fly Australia’s and Ocean Rafting’s buses run from Airlie Beach, not from the commercial airport. Unless you take Whitsunday Air Tours from the airport, you need your own way into town first. A flight on your first or second morning, with your bags already at the hotel, is the calmer plan; before the flight covers bags and connections.
Hamilton Island
None of the three flights leaves from Hamilton Island, and Ocean Rafting’s Airlie Beach scenic flight does not pick up there. If you are staying on Hamilton Island, scenic flights leave from the island’s own airport, and Ocean Rafting’s private charter flights also leave from Hamilton Island.
