Plane, Helicopter or Seaplane?
Which aircraft you can fly in from Airlie Beach: the fixed-wing scenic flights, where helicopters and seaplanes leave from, and which one lands on Whitehaven Beach.
From Airlie Beach, the scenic flights you can book on this site are all small fixed-wing planes: three companies, about an hour each, over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and the reef. For seeing Heart Reef and the islands in one go, the plane is the straightforward choice. Fly Australia’s Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight uses a high-wing plane with large panoramic windows, so the wing sits above the view, from US$240 (checked November 2026).
Helicopters and seaplanes do fly over the Whitsundays, but GetYourGuide sells neither from Airlie Beach, and the trips that land, on a pontoon or on the beach, are booked with the aircraft companies, some of them from Hamilton Island.
What the plane gives you

All three flights from Airlie Beach use fixed-wing planes, and all three promise every passenger a window seat. In about an hour they cover Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet and still reach the outer reef; Heart Reef is 76 km from Whitsunday Airport in a straight line.
- Fly Australia (the calendar above), 65 minutes: a high-wing plane with large panoramic windows. The pilot makes several passes over each place, so you are not left with one glimpse from one side.
- Ocean Rafting's Whitsundays & Heart Reef Scenic Flight, one hour: big windows and a guaranteed window seat, with the pilot’s commentary.
- Whitsunday Air Tours' Whitsundays & Great Barrier Reef Scenic Flight, 70 minutes: a guaranteed window seat and seven passengers at most.
None of the three lands anywhere. You take off and land at the same airfield.
Helicopters

Tourism Whitsundays says scenic flights by helicopter, seaplane or light aircraft leave from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Coast Airport (checked November 2026). GetYourGuide has none from Airlie Beach. Viator had one, a helicopter from Whitsunday Airport of about 30 minutes over Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, with three reviews when we checked in November 2026; it does not reach Heart Reef, and it cost more than the planes for about half the time in the air. We do not card it.
The helicopter trip that lands near Heart Reef leaves from Hamilton Island, not the mainland: Hamilton Island Air flies to a private pontoon moored in the Heart Reef lagoon (Tourism and Events Queensland, checked November 2026). It is sold by the company itself.
Seaplanes
A seaplane is the aircraft that can land on the water, and that is its point. Air Whitsunday flies a seaplane over the Great Barrier Reef and lands at Whitehaven Beach (Tourism and Events Queensland, checked November 2026). From Hamilton Island, Hamilton Island Air’s Reef & Beach Explorer seaplane lands on the water at Whitehaven, at A$830 a person with at least four passengers (Hamilton Island Air, checked November 2026). Neither is sold on GetYourGuide or on this site.
Which one, then
Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight
Fly Australia's 65-minute plane from Whitsunday Airport, a courtesy bus from Airlie Beach, Heart Reef, Hardy and Hook reefs, Whitehaven and Hill Inlet. You do not land.
Check dates →Airlie Beach: Fly Raft Package with Scenic Flight & Snorkeling
Ocean Rafting's Fly Raft Package: the 60-minute flight, then a semi-rigid inflatable boat to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, a lookout walk, snorkelling and lunch on the beach. The way to stand on Whitehaven from Airlie Beach without a seaplane.
See the day →Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.
If a pontoon landing near Heart Reef or a seaplane on the sand is what you are after, book it with the aircraft company; the Heart Reef pontoon trip starts on Hamilton Island. If the view is what you are after, the plane from Airlie Beach does it for less.
