Who Can Fly

Weight limits on the Airlie Beach scenic flights (125 or 130 kg), climbing into the plane, wheelchairs, children and babies, pregnancy and medical conditions.

Updated November 2026

Most adults can take any of the three flights from Airlie Beach. The limits are weight and getting into a small plane: 130 kg on Fly Australia’s and Whitsunday Air Tours’ flights, 125 kg on Ocean Rafting’s, and Ocean Rafting needs every passenger to climb the aircraft steps without help. If you weigh between 125 and 130 kg, take Fly Australia’s Airlie Beach: Whitsunday Islands & Heart Reef Scenic Flight, from US$240 (checked November 2026), or Whitsunday Air Tours’.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

Fly Australia’s flight is not suitable for wheelchair users; that is the one limit on it besides weight.

Weight

FlightWeight limit a personOther limits
Fly Australia130 kg (287 lb)Not suitable for wheelchair users
Whitsunday Air Tours130 kg (287 lb)Seven passengers at most
Ocean Rafting125 kg (275 lb)Moderate to high mobility: you climb the steps and platforms into the aircraft without help
Fly Raft Package (flight and boat)125 kg (275 lb)Not for pregnant women, people with back problems or mobility impairments

A small plane is loaded by weight. On Fly Australia’s flight, seats are allocated for the best weight and balance of the aircraft, every passenger is weighed at check-in, and people in one booking may not sit together. Everyone still gets a window. The limit is per seat, and on Fly Australia’s flight it is checked on the day, not taken on trust.

Getting in and out

Illustration: passengers in casual summer clothes climbing two short steps into the side door of a small white high-wing plane on a sunny tropical airfield, a pilot in a plain white shirt standing by the door
Illustration. Boarding a small plane means a couple of steps up into the cabin, which is why mobility and weight are the limits that matter.

On Ocean Rafting's flight, every passenger in the group must have a moderate to high level of mobility, enough to get into and out of the aircraft unaided using the steps and platforms. Fly Australia’s flight is not suitable for wheelchair users. Whitsunday Air Tours' flight sets no mobility or wheelchair rule either way.

If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or needs help with steps, none of the three listings promises a way aboard. Ask the company before you book rather than after.

Children and babies

No minimum age is set for any of the three flights on GetYourGuide. On its Viator listing, Fly Australia sells the same seat to everyone from age 2; infants under 2 sit on an adult’s lap, and infant seats are available. Ocean Rafting’s Viator listing takes children from age 2. Check the party-size options in the calendar for the ages it offers. A child of 2 or over takes a seat, and a window, of their own.

Pregnancy and medical conditions

None of the three flights lists pregnancy as a bar; the flight-and-boat package does, because of the boat. On Fly Australia’s flight, passengers whose medical condition could be affected by flying should see a doctor before booking and tell the company. If you are pregnant or have a condition that flying affects, that is the advice to follow for any of the three.
